What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Posted .

Do you know what you should do to deal with a dental emergency? Do you ever think about what qualifies as a dental emergency? In general, there are a few problems you should know about—and a few options you can try to address these different emergencies.

Would you be surprised to learn that having a tooth fall out is considered an emergency? If you’re able to get to our dentist quickly, we may be able to save your tooth. When you come to our office, please bring your tooth. We suggest placing the tooth in a glass of milk because this will help preserve it. You should also avoid handling your pearly whites by its root. If your tooth broke into several fragments, please collect as many as you can find.   It’s also important that you contact our dental team if you have lost a filling or if you injured your jaw.

Have you heard that a toothache could also be considered a dental emergency? While a toothache may not seem like a serious dental issue, it could be a sign of more serious problems. If your toothache lasts longer than a few days—or if your toothache is extremely painful—we recommend contacting us a soon as possible.  In the meantime, you could use store-bought painkillers to temporarily alleviate your discomfort.
